Recently I've played and finished Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition.
(Not a trailer for the Super Turbo Championship Edition, just something for those who don't know the game)
It's a Metroidvania-platformer-fighting-game.
I completed it in a bout 8 hours (a 100% run) and found it absolutely incredible. And for a game that only cost something like 10-15€ (can't remember) that is an even greater feat.
On a different Forum () I had the audacity to say that I think Guacamelee - and I quote - "blows Mario out of the water" and "is more creative than any Mario game I've played". Of course it was the literally most ridiculous thing someone had ever heard (what would've happened if I had posted this in the Guacamelee Wii U thread...).
I really don't understand. Is Mario as a franchise really that untouchable?
For me it has lost its charm a long time ago. And every new iteration I've played hasn't changed that. Quite the contrary. Nintendo keep surprising me in how they can release a new Mario Game every year and not create something that's more creative than a fucking cat suit.
Other developers get beaten to death when they release a new CoD or AC every year. Nintendo doesn't. Why? Just because "this Mario is New Super Mario Bros and not a 3D Mario"? It's still one game per year.
Where can Nintendo go with Mario? Will they ever really show me (or other gamers who grew up with Nintendo/Mario and who want to be taken by that good old magic this company has the potential to provide) something that genuinely surprises me, that blows me away, that isn't just another new power-up?
Yeah, this is a rant. But I think I won't get chased with torches and pitchforks here
