It had to be done!
Nintendo in a recent investors meeting outlined many of the shortcomings as a platform holder and now Iwata is trying to steady the ship with a mandate of letting internal teams work on what they want, doubling down on the gamepad and making it an indispencible piece of hardware, using mobile platforms to promote Nintendo's franchises and to be more liberal in their work with third parties handling Nintendo licenses.
But my question to you is should Nintendo just face facts and become a third party developer? Is their drive for hardware innovation as a platform holder doomed to fail?

If they werent having so much trouble with other third parties then I would say no but buying a console as basically a "Nintendo Machine" feels like a waste of money at this point. I would rather they went third party so I could play their games elsewhere.

Yeah go third party - your outdated hardware doesn't interest me. I remember when their machines were as powerful if not more so than their competitors.

I'm not so sure. I just don't think nintendo games would ever be the same again multi-platform. I mean the proper nintendo games, not the casual rubbish.

See I kind of think they've always had underpowered hardware. The NES was made to be cost effective.....SNES arguably less powerful than Megadrive but more powerful than the rash of 16 bit consoles that weren't true 16 bit. N64 severely hampered by cartridges. I guess the Gamecube was on a par? (then again I remember games like Beyond Good and Evil having worse sound) It's always been about the games and there just aren't enough these days! Also I need to give you a warning please don't ever say bad things against Nintendo. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED

Maybe it is because I was with Nintendo for so long growing up (N64 & Gamecube era) but I just wouldn't want to see them on other consoles. It would certainly save me money though on buying consoles if there was less of them! lol.

To be fair, as much as I would prefer to see Nintendo on other consoles now, back when Sega was doing this I was completely against that just like you are with Nintendo.

Yeah, I can remember when this happened with Sega when I had the dreamcast and I just seemed to 'accept it'. Probably because dreamcast was like my second console with nintendo being first. I had great memories of the mega drive (sonic games in particular).
Now it is just so normal to see sega games on other consoles. Although I have yet to play Sonic lost World most of their attempts at sonic games on nintendo consoles have been crap. Bar the 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog I have really enjoyed the other sonics games released on other consoles.

I enjoyed Generations and kind of liked Colours. I havent tried any of the other 3D ones though. Unleashed looked like it would have been a good game without all the stupid Werehog stuff.

DO we really think Sega are as good as now they were when they were in the console market?

Not at all. Although I will say that bought up a couple of good devs over the last year or so that should start giving us some better games.
