I've wanted to start a thread about this for a while now.
We are all apart of what used to be a geeky underground sub culture that nobody really cared for. However times have changed and it's now not uncommon to see some hipster wannabe wearing thick rimmed glasses and sporting a geeky t-shirt (sure a stereotype).
How do you feel about this now mass consumption of something that part of our culture for so long? It's very strange. I have a battered old Batman shirt which I pretty much bought in the year 2001 or something when play.com first started selling t-shirts. A couple of years ago I was walking somewhere wearing it and some guys drove past screaming "you lanky ginger geek" and I didn't really care, thanks for stating facts not exactly offensive! Other than that I never seemed to get much attention when wearing such t-shirts. Aside from the the old look of approval from someone else browsing the shelves in Gamestation. Now however the same battered Batman t-shirt has "earnt" me flirty comments from girls saying "OH my God! I love your retro batman shirt" and like admiringly going to touch my chest and it's a little bit weird as this is not the kind of attention I want at all in life (where were you 8 years ago!). Or sales assistant's at book stores having long chats with me about things and it's so awkward and weird to me. I don't wear these kind of items of clothing to draw attention to myself or to be fashionable. However it would appear it seems that way. I wear them because I like them simple as.
So is this slightly anecdotal example a sign of wider "problem" or should we embrace our slightly fringe hobby being accepted by the wider world it whatever form it might take?
