I've been on a bit of a Final Fantasy kick at the moment. I just bought a load of them on the Vita in the FF sale so I figured I'd make a thread to use while I try to make my way through them.
I did start off with IX but I have decided to leave that for now and go down to IV as its the earliest one I own. I got the PSP Complete Edition and was really impressed with how the game looked compared to what I remember of the SNES version. Not too far into it yet though as I only started earlier today.

These games have never interested me for some reason.
I remember trying one a few years ago and stopped playing pretty quickly...

I think VII, VIII, and IX are some of the greatest games ever made.
Other than those, they're OK.

Despite actually quite liking a lot of them, I have never actually completed a Final Fantasy game. I'm hoping that this time on the Vita I'll be able to change that.

IX was always my favourite, as it was the one I got through the most. Just playing it on Vita (but I only tend to play it in the mornings, which is only really possible when I'm on the late shift every three weeks) so it might take a while.

In later games, the lack of open world, too linear gameplay, poor/lack of side-missions and extras. I'd also like to point out that I've never played VI, so I'm only talking offline FF from VII onwards. EDIT: I'd also like to point out that I played them years after launch, so they were already well dated.

Oh yeah of course, I was just checking because you do seem to get those splits where people played the earlier games and prefer them then people started with VII and prefer those types. My first Final Fantasy was also VII so I do have a soft spot for those.

8 is my favourite, as it was the first one I played, but 10 is probably the one I played the most (and the only one I've completed). I'm also quite fond of 6 and 9, although I came to those a lot later and haven't really got into them properly.
I really don't see all the fuss about 7 either. I like the opening few hours, but as soon as I get to the world map, I just lose all interest.
I think I've got at least one copy of all of the main games somewhere. I went through a bit of a FF obsession for a while.

How've you been finding playing IX on a screen that small? I thought that backgrounds looked great but actual character designs I was having trouble figuring out what I was actually seeing and as this was my first time properly playing IX it was all the more difficult.

I have never finished a Final Fantasy....despite owning 1-5 in various guises. Also have Crisis Core on PSP which I really enjoyed but got stuck pretty closer towards the end.

If they made it so there was no world map sections, I'd buy it and play the shit out of it. I loved the game up until you get to the world map, then I always lose interest.
I just can't go back to RPGs with world map elements, unless it's something I really, really like the story of.

I think I got to the first town after you leave Midgar but yeah interest in the game drops dramatically for me once that happens.
