Yep just sat watching Chuck and Brandon Routh is in an episode and got me thinking as two modern reboots which is the best out of these two versions of good old Supes...
A little bit of viewing to jog the memory:
Superman Returns
Trailer:
Everything Wrong With:
Man of Steel
Everything Wrong With:
Two very different movies, one a sequel to previous versions that plays on that nostalgia to a large degree, one a hard sci-fi reimaginging.

In my eyes they are absolutely incomparable.
Superman Returns is one of my least favourite movies ever.
Man Of Steel was a fun, action packed, dark awesome super hero movie and I could not give less of a shit if it doesn't translate the character "Superman" well to film, because whatever super hero he was, I loved.

I think Man of Steel is a much better movie but it certainly had its own problems.
When I get back on my PC I'll find the interview Bryan Singer did about Returns recently. He mentions how he wished he did a reboot and how Darkseid was gonna be the bad guy at one point.

Man of Steel is the first Superman film that I've liked, so there's no competition for me.

Man of Steel was light years better in my opinion! Yes it is a very different movie and very 'sci-fi' but I just preferred pretty much everything.
Not a perfect film though. I do kinda wish that the sequel would just be another superman one to build on what they did in this before having loads of other DC characters in...

I do wonder if that is a result of the apparent limitations of Superman's character. In the 6 movies we've seen it could be argued there has really been no development. That's not to say such development doesn't exist in the comics (I'm unsure). However I feel the mass media movie limits it somewhat, we need to see Superman as the pinnacle of America despite being an alien or some bullshit.

Smallville did great in terms of development IMO
I always felt the films played it quite safe overall. Pretty much sticking to either Zod or Lex as main villains. Loads of others than can use which has been seen in comics (which I haven't read) or smallville.
I think it is more to do with they are trying to get to the highests (and money) of the Avengers franchise quickly, using this to build even further into a justice league film and what not. I think Man of Steel did well but not like 'omg amazing' and critic reviews were mixed on it.

""That was the title. Actually, my buddy, one of my two best friends, came up with that," he said."
It's like...the most obvious name for a Superman movie after "Superman".
